My Fiction’s take on danceable indie rock has been wonderfully realised on the record. Produced by ARIA winning Magoo, FIREROMANCEFIRE packs a serious punch and builds on the strength of the band’s previous releases – the “Your Tokyo” EP and double a-side “Tonight Tonight/The Loop”.

Their sound? It’s indie rock without the baggage. My Fiction know what makes people move, and how to connect. The big guitars, bigger melodies and powerful bottom end all combine to make something immediate, but with depth.

Live, My Fiction is just something else with the band fast earning a ‘don’t miss’ reputation with anyone that’s caught a gig.

The floor is packed with bouncing bodies as My Fiction hit song after song with such dexterity and perfection that I’m finding it hard to believe that these guys aren’t where Faker is in the Australian music world… It’s an astonishing performance, even bettered when ‘Grey City’ brings the house down during the encore… the night of musical wonder isn’t just good, it’s ten times good.” Rave Magazine

My Fiction launch debut album FIREROMANCEFIRE
My Fiction

It’s been some time coming, but powerhouse Brisbane four piece My Fiction are set to release their debut album FIREROMANCEFIRE.

Out in July through SUGARRUSH, the album will be officially launched on Friday, July 16 at Brisbane venue, The Zoo – presented by 4ZZZFM. The band will be supported by Numbers Radio and The Belligerents – with a special appearance from burlesque dancers The Judy Dolls.

The first taste from the album – the single Every June (at radio this week) – is a clear example of how far the band has come. Not just a superbly crafted slice of indie rock, it actually means something. The track is already gaining attention with Richard Kingsmill featuring it on Triple J’s 2010, adding “…they’re one to keep an eye on”.

Speaking about the track, the band’s Eric Robinson says: “Every June” was born out of a very sad time in my life – these lyrics paint the chaos of my life in the weeks following my mother’s death. It is a literal snapshot of me trying to get my bearings, attempting to piece together my mother’s wisdom and instructions she had given me among all the desperation and sadness I was dealing with.”

My Fiction also recently released an exclusive free download of album track Gravel Rash and Football Stars, which is already generating a buzz around the album online.

LAUNCH TICKET SPECIAL

Over the past year, the band has built an enviable local following. And they will be rewarding their fans with a special launch ticket bundle. For just $20 (pre-sold), fans will secure entry to the Brisbane launch, and a copy of the new album.

Tickets go on sale June 7 through www.thezoo.com.au The Brisbane album launch will be backed up by a run of dates interstate, to be announced soon.

Jackie Marshall - 'Ladies' Luck' out now!
Jackie Marshall A

“A swirling, crunching, ebbing and flowing storm of rock ‘n’ roll nirvana…Climb on board or get the hell out of the way.” Rhythms

“That rare thing: an Aussie original” Weekend Australian

“Holy crap! Jackie has one of the most incredible voices of all time. Sounds like she draws it through her feet from deep within the earth and lets it rip like a volcano spewing passionate chunks of wisdom and poetry!” Mijo The Great (Triple J Unearthed)

Hitchhiking adventure girl, Jackie Marshall, unleashes her explosive new album Ladies’ Luck – a blazing ‘Janis Joplin meets Dolly Parton’ affair, that rocks its huge heart out – just like the gal herself (as anyone who has seen Jackie’s brilliant live shows will testify).

Ladies’ Luck chronicles Jackie’s real-life adventures and tall tales since the release of her critically acclaimed – and AMP shortlisted – 2006 debut Fight n Flight. Where Fight n Flight was a stripped down, acoustic gem (featuring Jackie’s masterful guitar playing), Ladies’ Luck reflects her need to make some noise “because these sounds have been doing blockies around my skull for a decade and I needed to get them out!” says Jackie.

And what beautiful noise! Featuring the powerhouse Black Alles Band, a fluid collection of kick-ass musicians who play what Jackie describes as ‘alt-deco rock’, combining dirty 60s rock’n’roll like The Stones and Grateful Dead with her beloved 90s Indie rock. Epic and masterful production from Ben Tolliday delivers an album that deserves to be played loud.

There’s pop perfection in title track ‘Ladies’ Luck’ (inspired by a drinking session with fellow AMP nominee Lucie Thorne), full-throttle rock in first single ‘Too, Somebody’ and ‘Ugly Man’ (My grandma said to choose the ugly man/ He’d love me better than you can), country love in ‘Headn South’ (He didn’t like her flaming hair/She didn’t like his blatant stare/They got it on right then and there), the devil in ‘DeeDees Wife’ and one of rock’s most evocative break-up songs in album closer ‘I Should’ve Drunk More’.

Ladies’ Luck is an album of passion and extremes, as tough as it is tender and the perfect vehicle for Marshall’s honey husky ‘lived-in’ voice and her exceptional gift as a razor-tongued raconteur with an ear for a beautiful melody.

Jackie Marshall rocks! Ladies Luck is here to prove it.

The album is available in Australian stores through Vitamin from April 19 and online through SUGARRUSH.

SUGARRUSH co-presents Murder Ballads: Chapter Two... Murder Ballads: Chapter Two

If there’s one thing that’s fascinated songwriters for centuries, it’s the darker side of life.

Ever since artists started penning their own tunes, dark tales of death, crime and retribution have provided some of music’s most powerful, painful and passionate moments.

From those early folk balladeers to Johnny Cash and Nick Cave, we just can’t get enough of these eerily intoxicating tales, better known as ‘murder ballads’.

And that deliciously dark tradition will be celebrated once again this April when some of Brisbane’s finest artists come together over two very special nights for Murder Ballads Chapter Two.

To be staged at Brisbane's Judith Wright Centre, the event follows on from last year's sell out Murder Ballads: Chapter One.

Each act will perform a selection of their favourite murder ballads from past and present, alongside their own original songs inspired by the dark side.

Murder Ballads is custom-made for lovers of the dark side in all of us.

Lineups:

Friday 23 April
The Good Ship
Silver Sircus
Texas Tea
The Blackwater Fever
Kristy Apps

Saturday 24 April

Tickets available online here

Each night will begin at 6pm with an acoustic performance in the JWC Shopfront area, where an exhibition of murderous artworks will be held, along with finger food (not real fingers). The main shows commence in the main theatre at 7.30pm.

Edward Guglielmino releases ‘Late At Night’ Edward Guglielmino

Brisbane avant-garde battle-cat Edward Guglielmino has been working his threadbare muso pants off in recent months, self distributing releases to one fan at a time, clashing with corporate giants over logo designs, and squeezing every last beer from riders all over Australia.

With the hard yards notched up, phase two of Ed G’s plan for world domination kicks in this May, with a world release of his latest offering, Late At Night. Released physically in Australia through MGM, with worldwide downloads available via SUGARRUSH, Ed’s unique brand of jangly abstract-rock will be given a chance to win over the masses, after capturing a sizeable online audience including an über-contingent of Germans.

Described as a ‘triumphant debut album’ by critics, Late At Night drags the listener along on a ragged journey which is at once raw with sentiment yet defiantly cohesive. Lead single ‘Rhythm Of Life’ brings a steady backbeat to a release laden with late night overtones, conjuring the image of a wine glass strewn keyboard in the wee hours providing company for Ed’s crooning. ‘Lion In Your Bed‘ provides an anguished ultimatum between wallowing in a guitar riff tuned to heartbreak or indulging in humorous word play imagery. And although self-depreciating ode to dysfunction ‘Fail With Me’ may forebode future failure, fail is something Edward Guglielmino is simply not programmed to do.

Stay up Late At Night with Edward Guglielmino from May 8th; the part of every music fan that empathises with the struggling-artist-gets-a-break concept demands it.

Tara Simmons releases 'Spilt Milk'
Tara Simmons - Spilt Milk

She’s long been one of Australia’s most exciting new artists, and now we’re proud to announce that Tara Simmons’ debut longplayer Spilt Milk is available to download everywhere through SUGARRUSH.

The album, described as ‘intricate yet organic’, once again features Tara’s trademark mix of heartfelt folk and sample based electronica, though explores both elements to their independent extremes this time around.

Packed with highlights from the opener ‘We Are’, it is evident that each note of Spilt Milk has been crafted to form exactly what was envisioned. No time or superflous instrumentation is wasted in letting Tara’s pop intuition roam with the boppy radio favourite ‘When You Say That I Don’t Care About You‘, the fragmented ‘Everything But The Kitchen Sink’ and the whimsical ‘Long After The Boy‘. With only Rhodes as accompaniment on the beautifully fragile ‘Meet In The Middle‘, experimental closing track ‘The Worst Of It‘ provides a sweet contradition as dozens of Taras are heard to blend endless layers of vocal samples together.

‘…sublime is the word’ Rave Magazine Album of the Week

‘An exceptionally strong debut and an easy early contender for Brisbane release of the year – but it’s definitely just the beginning of what one hopes will be a long and impressive career.’ Time Off Magazine Album of the Week

Flamingo Crash in the NME
You don’t need to tell us what a remarkable band Flamingo Crash is. And it seems lots of people outside this wide brown land are starting to take notice – take UK rock Bible the NME for example. In a special feature on Brisbane’s best bands, legendary rock writer Everett True named the band among the finest the city has produced of late. Here’s what he had to say:

FLAMINGO CRASH
The disco hustlers
The smarter Yanks (Glass Candy, Chromatics) are throwing sharp angles and soft shapes, freaking out to the cool sounds of post-disco. The smarter Aussies are, too – Flamingo Crash mix post-Brooklyn hipster swagger with a kid who drums like he’s the new Clem Burke from Blondie to dance rhythms as sharp as MIA’s."

My Fiction join the SUGARRUSH family
We're rather chuffed to announce that in the coming weeks, the debut EP from Brisbane's My Fiction will be available for download globally through SUGARRUSH.

In the band's own words, My Fiction's music is "...urgent and edgy, but also adventurous, warm and open. The lyrical content is drawn from many places, spanning the busy streets of Tokyo, the grey city skyline of Warsaw and the local seaside at Sandgate. Delving into My Fiction’s world – their music speaks of dark and mischievous romance, heartbreak, missing the last train home and taking your BMX for a joyride in the suburbs."

The Your Tokyo EP was produced by local luminary Jeff Lovejoy and is also available at any one of the band's many upcoming shows. To find out more, head to My Fiction's profile page on this site.

And while you're at it, check out the fantastic new clip for the track "Go".

The Black Stars play Splendour
We love festivals. And Byron Bay's Splendour in the Grass is our favourite.
It's even better now that The Black Stars have been added to the line-up for the sold-out August weekend. Here's what the Splendour crew had to say about the band:

"Three piece Byron Bay outfit THE BLACK STARS list their influences as artists as diverse as Pixies, The Hives, The Datsuns, At The Drive In, Rise Against to Faith No More, Ministry, Millencolin and more. Daniel Johns and Paul Mac described their debut EP release in 2006 as “absolutely brilliant”, now Money Or Your Life is another short but very sweet release. Produced by studio wizard Phil McKellar, THE BLACK STARS are as good as Oz rock can be. Clocking in at a whirlwind 10 minutes and 42 seconds of fun before you know it the five tracks are over and you’re still dancing around your room with your broom in your hand. With passion and energy to spare THE BLACK STARS have got all the key ingredients for a small revolution in your eardrums."

The band have a bunch of shows coming up over the next few months, so check out their MySpace or SUGARRUSH profile.
